Sports Premium

Since 2013/14, the Government has been providing funding per annum for each academic year to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding.

This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The money goes directly to primary school Headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

In the second year of the initiative, the funding was used to:

  • Continue to train a new PE Coordinator and up skill and train existing staff.
  • Hire coaches from Premier Sports.
  • Provide staff training on how to teach PE Provide cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport.
  • Buy new equipment.
  • Provide improved extra-curricular activities.
  • Secure a Service level agreement with a School Sport Partnership (Dance desk).
  • Run sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games. • Employ expert advice to evaluate the school’s current strengths and weaknesses in PE and sport, and implement plans for improvement.
  • Forge links with PE teachers in local secondary schools to help primary staff improve their PE and sports provision.
  • Establish an inter-school system to enable regular, school sports competitions for pupils of all ages. Pay for additional swimming lessons for those pupils unable to swim by the end of Year 6 and Increase the swimming provision to Year 2.
  • Provide extra, additional activities such as outdoor and adventurous activities.

The school has an SLA (Service Level Agreement) with Premier Sport which will support staff development and provide lunchtime and after school clubs.

Premier Sport currently offers two after school clubs for both key stages (2 hours per week) a lunchtime club (1 hour per week) and curriculum support for staff and children on Fridays (4 hours per week). Planning for these sessions is in place and has been quality assured.

The school will continue to work closely with Dance desk to support the school in physical Education. This support is for staff professional development. The PE coordinator will attend training at regular interval throughout the year.

  • Further staff training in PE. This will also include opportunities for staff to visit other schools to experience quality PE.
  • Investment in further PE equipment, with a view to quality provision throughout the school’s expanding age range.

Impact of the funding:

  • Access to high quality coaching for children which also allows for staff to be trained in specific areas.
  • Ongoing support for the PE co-ordinator and participation in a PE package of support.
  • Increased variety of PE activities during the curriculum and after school provision.
  • The opportunity for PE to continue to develop and retain a high status within the school, and the ability to confidently plan for the changes within the PE Curriculum.
  • Review of the Premier Sports December 2014, provision changed to allow input to embed into school practice. Taster days arranged to promote new sports and weekly session delivered to enable children to partake in Tag Rugby Inter sports competition.
  • Regular uptake of after school clubs x2 per week.

Funding in 2013/14

In the first year of the initiative, the funding was used to:

  • Buy new equipment.
  • Provide improved extra-curricular activities.
  • Secure a Service level agreement with a School Sport Partnership (Dance desk).

Impact of the funding:

  • Up skilling of the Coordinator. The coordinator has written the new medium term plans in line with the new primary curriculum.
  • Increase in the quality of PE teaching – staff report that following input from Premier Sports they have gained ideas of structuring sports sessions.
  • Following the input from Premier Sports providing a wider range of sports during curricular time and extra-curricular time.
  • Increase in pupil engagement in PE during curricular time.
  • Increased participation in intra-schools competitions - Handball tournament at Harborne Primary School and Tag Rugby at Stuart Bathurst.
  • Increase in inter-school competition – revised Sports day June 2014.
